Meet the Cancer Heroes - Dr. Suzanne Kamel-Reid

01.22.2018

My name is Suzanne Kamel-Reid, and I'm a breast cancer patient at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and I'm also a geneticist here that Princess Margaret.

The pathologist actually took me in, and because I work in pathology, and so I went to ask him if he had my results yet. And he's the one who told me I had breast cancer. And my initial response was, "I don't have time for this. I'm too busy." And it really took a while to sink in that, you know, it's not like you have a choice with these things it just happens.

I've been, I think, very fortunate to be in a career that I love going to work every day. And so, when I was sick it was something that kept me going. Knowing that I could think about other things and that I was still helping patients even when I was a patient myself.

I think it was the emotional part that was very difficult for me. I mean, I want to be there for my family, for my husband, my children, my parents, my sister. I mean, I want to be there for the family. And I feel like I've grown in my lab so much that I'm not willing to let it go right now. I feel that there are a lot more things that we could do.

I mean, I can't say that I haven't had my down days, and I still do have down days, but, for the most part, I really try to be as positive as possible because I think that, and you'll hear that from many sources, that being positive, it is really very helpful in terms of recoveries.

And I just feel that there's so much more to do still, so there's no way I'm going to give up.
